Title: Dave's Big Contest...Ideas?
Post by: Dave Winfield on January 14, 2013, 11:25:04 PM
I have been thinking, for some time, to have a big contest.
I mean a Paper Model contest.

and when I say "big", I mean a big prize
...like say a CD-Rom with my entire Model Collection.
Or at least a very large collection of models on one CD
(chosen from my store).

And it would be a long term project...maybe 3 to 6 months.

My first thought was just an open build contest using any of my models.

Then I thought about "best creative use" of one of my models...like a Diorama,
or modification, or interesting photograph, or just adding extras.

Any interest in this?...thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Feel free to mention this to your friends and fellow modellers
and get their opinions too.
(I prefer you don't post this info anywhere else...yet)

Dear AirDave:
I like the Idea 6 months and the Diarama idea, I've got the CANCAR now will try that one. When I first saw the subject I thought that you wanted to see models built to a larger scale! I wonder what scale the Autocar would be printed onto 11x17 cardstock. It would be cost prohibitive at Office Max but my wifes museum office has a copier hooked to their computers and it can print 11x17 hummmmmmmmm.
Intyersting,
MILES :-X

"Big" Contest...just means big contest.
LOL
Although changing the scale of a model would be quite acceptable to me,
...but I might restrict "micro" builds.

My first idea was to see what people can do with my models.
Obviously I want people to buy and build my kits...so its all about promotion.

For a contest, I could obviously judge the best build of a model (quality, skill, etc)
but why not also consider how the model is displayed, photographed or used
in a Diorama or with other models?
That way, a less skilled builder could improve their chances with a better presentation.

I'd like to judge all models together,
I don't want to create multiple categories  and be forced to work out multiple prizes.
The original idea was one big prize that all would be interested in
...a custom made CD with a lot of models on it!
In fact I have already thought about a collection of models.

I'm starting to think that I might have to do a Grand Prize and one or two Runners Up prizes.
That would be easy enough.

I'll definitely give it a long time frame...like 3-6 months.
I also think it should be "new" builds, not existing ones.
Anything started this year...and no more than 50% finished by the start of the competition.

So, what does everyone think...?

[Miles...that Autocar is already about 15" long!]

I can do this, you have lots of models to fiddle with. Just set the dates and let's go on. I personally could use some side project while constructing the flying boat - just to keep me sane. I've been stuck with the blasted cabin for a while now.  :o

I'm in too!!

I'm not good with dioramas, though. At least not that I know. I've never tried. But if it's not a diorama, I can think of something else.

Let me know when you are ready with all the details so I can post the contest on Facebook and the Spanish-spoken forums.

Question...

A couple of months ago I bought Dr. Zarkov's F-15B Eagle with your repaint for the Bicentennial.

Do you accept this one for the Big Contest?

I think, to be fair, I will restrict the contest to any model available at papermodelshop.com
(not including any of the free models)

The Modelart F15 is my repaint, but I don't sell that model
and I don't receive any royalties from its sale.

...
I'm going to try to make up the Contest rules and info today.

something built!

Five months is a very reasonable period for the contest. I wish I had personally more time for the hobby  ;). I will be rooting for the participants though!

Nice BIG Troll model!
No, it not an acceptable entry but you obviously figured that out.

The Contest is underway and I have created a new area for all the pertinent threads:
[http://cutandfold.info/cutandfoldforum/index.php?board=23.0 (http://cutandfold.info/cutandfoldforum/index.php?board=23.0)]

The Rules and Information Post has all the info you need.
I think I have covered everything you need to know.

However, if there are specific questions, I have also started a Questions and Answers
thread for anything not already covered in the Information thread.

Questions...

1. I understand I can add lights, motors, etc, to my creation (mashups). Correct?
But I see that kacrut added additions to the model, but those were not accepted.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here.

2. Could non-English spoken members make their entries in their own language? I'm promoting the contest in the Spanish forums and not everyone speaks English.

From Admin: Please look in the Questions Thread for answers to this Question!
