AT6 Texan 1/33 scale
« on: June 10, 2012, 11:33:08 AM »
Not being any sort of expert on the Texan, I am hoping to learn quickly
and maybe hear from those who do have an interest in this bird.

Since I already have a basic template* completed as a result of my redesign of Ken Uhrig's
Harvard kit, I am going to use it as the basis for some Texan models in 1/33 scale.

First...I'm off to find some reference material...although I think I have already decided on the first model.
Wikipedia here I come! lol

By coincidence the first image I see is a nice shot of two aluminum Texans in flight!
I have had this image for sometime in my own files, and I really like the clean look to the aircraft.
Plus I wanted to start off with a mostly bare metal aircraft...so this is it.

Other suggestions for Texans are welcome, but keep in mind I am not going to get into any major variations on the Texan version.

I'm very pleased to see this project continue. There are lots of variations on on the basic AT-6/SNJ/Harvard that all used the same basic airframe so I can't imagine you'll be lacking for subjects.

How about this for a different Canadian version?  I have a number of walk-around photos I took a few years back.

yes, that is a little different.
I will put that in the folder...

I have also come across some other nationality versions of the plane.

Still working on the basic Texan...
right now, trying to get the basic pattern finished and all the pages for repaints.
Making up some new Instruction pages.

Decided to have a little fun with details like panel rivets.
Hopefully get the Wings done today.

Updates and Modifications

The tweaking and fiddling never ends!
I am constantly looking to tweak parts, streamline the fit, or just improve the models in general.
This is a pain sometimes...since it means constantly updating older versions of models.
(sorry ecardmodels staff)

Thats why at a certain point I drift away from a model design and don't do anymore...because
it might mean updating way too many models! lol

Anyway, I am just finishing up my test build of the Golden Hawk (Bud Granley's) Texan
and I keep tweaking things...I can't stop!!!

And I keep running back to my computer and applying those tweaks to the model
...and then applying them to my other Texan kits (released and unreleased).

Luckily only two Texan kits have been released so far (the X-151 and N7095C) so there isn't
too much to update. (All modifications will obviously apply to all subsequent models)

Heres some of the tweaks:
-minor adjustments to the Exhaust location and heat shield.
-reduce the Exhaust pipe size
-minor adjustment to the Gear Doors and updated the instruction pages.
-added the "roll cage" to the cockpit.
-minor shape adjustments to the wing root fairings to improve the fit.

Some fairly minor stuff I know...but it all goes toward trying to offer the best model I can.

So, I am sending up two updated kits to ecardmodels...and if you bought the X-151 or the newly available N7095C
just log back in to your ecardmodels account and grab the modified versions.
Thanks

More texans in the works!

And more updates too!

Getting ready to release the Israeli Air Force Texan

and a Korean War era Mosquito Squadron USAF Tactical aircraft

Also got Bud Granley's Golden Hawk ready to go...just waiting on some photos of my test build.

...

More to come...working on a couple of yellow ones:
Maryland Air national Guard and a USAF version.

Many more after that too!

And for something really different

And, if you wanted something really different for a challenge, you could do an XAT-6E version  :o, maybe in racing colours if you could find some colour reference.  I am not sure I would call it pretty or an improvement over the original, but it would be different.  There are a number of references if you google it.

Keep up the good work.

John

Very interesting...but that sure is one ugly plane!
lol
to be honest, I never thought the AT6 or Harvard were very attractive
but thats okay since theiy're functional...not meant to be attractive.

Isn't that sort of like streamlining a Garbage truck to make it go faster?
lol sorry

Thanks for the suggestion...other than repaints of this kit, I don't want to
get into any serious modification.
