Dave - now I see the missing structures and parts in the pictures you posted. WIP and all that plus me being impatient. ;-)
Could you explain how the steering is supposed to work - I mean hoew is the wicked, heavy lump of steel and that fragile carriage supposed to co-operate?

The tail unit evolved while on Willie, and then again when it was used on the Mk.1 tanks.

I don't have much info on the swiveling hubs...I don't really know how they work inside.
I've seen a closeup photo of the hubs on a Mk.1 tank...the axle is supposed to be the same design.
Everything is contained inside a boxey structure at the ends of the axle.

Anyway, the basic operation is simple...but it took me hours of studying the diagrams to figure it out! lol
I was so confused by the hydraulic system and how it connected to the steering.

I think the turning angle is small, only a few degrees.
The tail unit acts more like a rudder, putting pressure on the tail of the tank to help it turn.
The hydraulic system on the back of the turn is only for lifting the carriage off the ground.
I thought it had something to do with the steering, but it does not.

Include that picture in the extra parts set and educate people - like me now. Thanks Dave.

okay, so its a little rushed...but its done...
and now I get to packing up models for the IPMC next week!

The Tail unit is a little tricky to install,  but if everything is prepared properly, its not too bad.

I'm happy enough with it all...a few details fudged...I just don't have clear reference material for some areas.
And I will leave it up the builder if they want to add more details.

Only thing I might change is the wheel size.
Looks like my wheels are a little small, in overall diameter...judging against photos.
I'll remeasure and decide.

Still thinking about putting this into a "add-on" kit for Little Willie, along with the Turret.
I could also include the printable base sheet.
Only thing is, the Turret was only on the first (Bullock tracked) version of Little Willie, not this one.
And it was not completed and only in place for a very short time.

I have no interest in producing the earlier Bullock Tracks.
I might just include the Turret but explain that it would be innacurate when fitted with this track configuration?

How about a photo of the whole thing with the additional mechanism attached?

I just uploaded a bunch of pics of Willie.
Photo Gallery here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsk4Mm2AH

Probably easier just to send you there.

This is a (sort of) Koolwheelz project I started a long time ago...

since I have been a little preoccupied this past week (with family death)
and I am also waiting on new files for the Tutor model,
I decided to revisit this project.

My original plan was to do a small (KoolWheelz) version of the Little Willie Tank.

But my first problem was scale.
The average Koolwheelz scale is about 1/60...and that would make the Little Willie tank a bit too big to fit onto one page.
So, I had to shrink it down below Koolwheelz scale...but I wasn't sure how much.

In the end, I settled on a common 1/72 scale.
So I am unsure if its going to be a Koolwheelz model now (or maybe just something else).

One of the reasons I decided to revisit this project (and get it completed)
was because of recent discussions on the Landships forum
concerning the early version of Little Willie with its early Bullock Track design
and questions about the short-lived upper Gun housing(fixed turret).

I thought it would be fun to modify the small scale Willie model with a set of Bullock tracks
and add the upper "turret"...but still keeping it simple paper model constuction of course.
(I already had the turret designed as an "add-on" kit for the big model!)

There are only two photos (that I know of) that show the complete Willie early version
(with the early Bullock Tracks and the upper housing in place
...but the vehicle is covered by tarpaulin and you can't see what it looks like).

A model version seemed like a logical idea.
So here it is...

I haven't decided how or when I will release the models...but I'll let you know.

Dave,

I want to build one of you armoured vehicles and have been thinking of taking the plunge with this one.

Is this your easiest? It will be a first for me for this type of model.

And what paper thickness, and will it print on A4?

I try to make my models as simple as possible.
Because I am lazy (and I want a simpler design),
but I also want to appeal to less experienced builders.

Unfortunately...there are some things that just can't be simplified to a beginner's level.
Things like very small parts sometimes can't be avoided.
As well as complicated shapes ...requiring either a lot of parts,  or made from few parts but with complicated folds and curves.

The other factor is the part count of a kit.
The Little Willie kit looks daunting because of the number of pages (26)
and the high part count (somewhere close to 300 I think).
(although the Centurion kit is way over two thousand!)

High part count is a bit misleading...its often caused by repetitious parts.
Although, cutting out lots of repetitive shapes is not fun.

Willie is probably the easiest large scale kit
(of my AFVs...this includes the Autocar Armored Car and Lorry, Little Willie, and Centurion Tanks)

I would say the same thing to anyone...be patient and take your time.
I have provided a complete design and build thread that should assist anyone building this model
but you also have a forum to posts your progress and get help if you need it.

And I am only an email away...skype too, if you really need it.

I designed Willie using a page frame...it should print at 100% on either size page.
(You waste a little bit of length when using A4, thats all)

I used 65lb for smaller parts...including most of the interior... or anything that requires rolling.
For larger flat parts...anything that would benefit from a little stiffer card...frame rails, Hull panels, etc..and the multiple layered parts... I used 110lb cardstock.

Thanks a lot Dave.

Appreciated the advice. I am reasonably experienced in building in paper - micromodels, birds, architecture, etc, but the REPETATIVE part count is really the put off.

You have answered that and the other questions though so may have a crack soon. Especially as this one appeals to me!

I especially like your approach to the tracks!
