Updates to existing P-51A/B/C/D Models
« on: November 19, 2012, 08:55:13 AM »
I'm going to create a separate thread here for easier reference.

Some place to post those pesky little mods and updates that are often required.
These will be specific to any of my Mustang kits.

Cripes A'Mighty P-51D

Been brought to my attention, that I missed the striping artwork on the small spine Antenna.

A small error yes, but none the less an error!
It has been fixed.

I was also asked about the lack of rivets on the upper wing surfaces (of my model).

This is in fact not an error.
P-51 wings were smoothed out with putty. The rivets are actually not visible on the top side
of the wings. The putty might have worn over time revealing more and more rivets.  But I tried
to simulate the lack of upper rivets in this way.

I was also asked about the lack of smoke trails on the wings, behind the MG ports.

That type of artistic detail is something that I may or may not add. I try not to do every model
exactly the same.  In this case, I noticed that Cripes showed smoke and stains in other areas
and it made sense that the MG trails should be there to remain consistent with everything else.

So, I have updated the model with some smoke blackening on the wings.

[remember, if you have already purchased this model from ecardmodels,
you just need to check in to your account and request the updated version]

Actually Gerardo, that is "heat discolouration".
And it is the byproduct of having a polished finish.
(He may also be running the engine a little lean which produces a hotter exhaust.)

The smoke trail that I added to Jeesil Peesil (and removed)
was supposed to be a sooty smoke stain.
Representing what I could see in an old photo of the plane.
Unfortunately my artwork was rushed and poorly executed.

UPDATE TO CRIPES A'MIGHTY AND OTHER P-51Ds...

Seems I reversed the colour on another Windshield Canopy part!
This time, its the blue paint on the Windshield for Cripes A'Mighty.

I painted the top strip instead of the bottom.

So I have repaired the paint error and uploaded a newly modified kit to the shops.
(If you bought the model through ecardmodels, you can go and request the updated version.)
Sorry for the inconvenience.

...
I've also noticed a few builds having difficulty with the placement of the Canopy, specifically
the front Windscreen part.

It needs to fit further forward than some of the builds I have seen.
So I have added a reference line on the upper fuselage that should help with the placement.

This update will appear on the newly updated Cripes A'Mighty kit
and I will attempt to add it to all subsequent P51D releases.

This image shows the updated Windscreen colouring
as well as the newly added placement reference on the upper cowling.

Heres a template that you can save and use for fitting the windscreen on the P51D:

ANOTHER UPDATE FOR P-51D MUSTANGS!
March 03, 2013

I decided to make a small modification to the tail of the D model Mustang.
(I may apply a similar modification to other kits, but for now this is just for D models)

All subsequent releases will have this fix...but for any older releases,
this update will serve the purpose.

Simple really...I added an extra former to the Rudder that spreads the bottom
to make it fit over the fuselage a little better.
I also shortened the upper tapered extension to better fit inside the rudder parts.
The Rudder now has three former parts instead of one.

I've also added four corner braces for the Wing Spar and Rib assembly.

Download this updated Former page and modified Instruction pages.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4zsbaa90n0b8qsq/P-51D_Updates_03-02-13.pdf
(This applies to any and all P-51D kits so keep it with your files.)

Download is also available in the "Extras" section at www.papermodelshop.com

.........................

I've also created a couple of new Pedestal Stands,
one specifically for the P-51D model.
(Its designed to fit nicely around the lower air intake)

The stand is designed specifically for the 1/33 scale Mustang
and comes with a light and dark "stone" texture finish.
Theres also a spot for adding information or a plaque (not included).

Theres also a similar stand available for my P-47 Thunderbolts.!

Both stands are a free download...get them in the "Extras" section of www.papermodelshop.com

The P-47 stand is a little off balance...will take a little trimming to get the plane into the desired postion.
And both stands need some stiff card in the base for strength.
other than that, they work good...I used them both at the Model show last weekend.
And I had a couple of people ask about the stands...they were thrilled to know it was a free download.

Important News....

if you have any interest in my original Red Tail Mustang models...
I will soon be discontinuing the current Tuskegee Airmen Red Tail Mustangs P-51B/C models.

Some of the first P-51 Mustangs I created from the original Marek model
were an assortment of "Red Tail" Mustangs. These were all B and C model Mustangs.
I created INA The Macon Belle a P-51C, a complete 1/33 scale model
and then I created three "Variant Packs", each containing the necessary parts to convert
the Macon belle model into four more Tuskegee Airmen Aircraft.
(Thirteen models in total)

See the models here: http://papermodelshop.com/html/p51_mustang_usa.html

These first generation B/C Mustang models have been through a number of changes
and just recently some major modifications were made to the A,B and C model Mustangs.
New textures and colours, new Landing Gear components, a complete redraw of the model template
and the addition of a complete cockpit... creating what I will call the 2nd generation model.

I have been producing new Mustangs with the "new" template, but I had hoped to update some of the
first generation models.  However since there are just too many to choose from, I couldn't decide
which ones were in demand and so I decided to wait until I got any serious requests for specific models.

However I did release an update kit, for those who have purchased the first gen Mustangs, that includes
the cockpit kit and other modifications (for the first gen model).
also can be seen here: http://papermodelshop.com/html/p51_mustang_usa.html

My personal interest in the Tuskegee planes has prompted me to create a 2nd gen version of INA The Macon Belle.
However, once I replace the existing Macon Belle model, the Variant Packs will no longer be usable and will have to
be removed from the shops.  In their place, I will be recreating some of them, if not all, using the 2nd gen template.
Any Red Tail Mustangs produced from this point will be released as individual kits...in other words, no more multiple
aircraft variant Packs.

If you like the look of the first gen models or are interested in grabbing the multiple model variant packs, now is the
time to do so.  Or if you are interested in a specific Red Tail Mustang aircraft, or Pilot, let me know what it is.
Otherwise please stay tuned for the 2nd gen Tuskegee Airmen Mustang kits.

No wonder!!

I was checking on your shop about those 2 new kits as individual releases.

I wanted to ask for the P-51 Mustang INA (#72) that appears in the Disney's Planes movie! But I didn't find a reference on Internet. LOL!

But seriously, I'm following the series Air Aces, in Military Channel, and the chapter about the Red Tails they used the INA Mustang, and it really looked. good.

INA is a common reference because of the replica that exists today.
Its something that folks can relate to because they can actually see that (replica) plane today.
.
Only thing I hate is when people start believing they are seeing the real thing
(like with the Memphis Belle)
or aren't always told its a fake.
