P-47 Razorback "Lucky"
« on: October 27, 2015, 11:25:40 AM »
Here is another P-47 from Dave. This time is a razorback.

The P-47 Lucky was the airplane of Lt. Col. Robert Johnson. I found in this little book that I have,
recounts some of his dogfights in the Thunderbolt and mentions that Johnson was the 6th top ace
flying ace of WWII, with 27 (28 depending on the source) victories.

Dave's Thunderbolt is one of the latest re-designs, which gives us enhanced weathering, rivet details
and special lights and shadows on the painting. The kit comes with detailed cockpit, option of retractable
landing gear, clear canopy, and other features making this model a very good option for a P-47.

My book:

Here are the first couple of photos. Front part of the fuselage.

As you can see, the fit is great, that means you won't have any issues on cutting the
parts to the exact lines. The closing of the cylinders are exact.

NOTE: Former 4A is not glued, but I needed to double check that I won't have a "banana" fuselage.

A little progress last night.

I'm using the proposed control panel, which has two parts. Lot of holes there, but the end result is rather OK.
I adjusted a piece of acetate in the middle of the two parts to simulate glass.

I went ahead with the pilot's office. This is also a very good redesign.

The cabin looks busy... and that is good!

Easyly fits in the fuselage. Just be careful with the headrest.

The completed banana.

Fabulous to see this model getting built.
It will be released in November, once Gerardo shows us how its done.

This aircraft was originally a papermodel suggestion and request by StompRocket designer Mike Bauer.
I created the model a few months back after Mike passed along Robert Johnson's story to me.
Unfortunately Mike leads such a busy life these days, he has not had the opportunity to build the model himself...
thats why I asked Gerardo to give it a try.

...
Gerardo? I notice the colour seems a bit washed out in your print.
Can this be explained?
I like the look. It looks worn and weathered.
But the red is washed out from around the insignia (Type 3a Star and Bars).
Not a problem...but I wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem with the model files.

Is not the model.
Is the paper type I just bought. I didn't like it either.
Need to invest in a higher quality cardstock.

But I found an "area of opportunity" (sorry, I don't have the model with me here to tell you the exact part numbers):

1. If you want to build the model with tail wheel well, the part of the aft fuselage does not show where to cut out the well.

I might edit this post when I get home. But for now, that's what I've found.

Now let's continue with the tail.

Everything OK here.
