Modern Airport Accessories - Civil Aviation Diorama Kit
« on: May 01, 2017, 10:12:38 AM »
This was a topic discussed in the past, and I have finally been motivated to work on it.
This will be a newer Kit of Diorama Accessories for the Civil Airport and Aviation fan.
Things like Airport Tugs and Tractors, Baggage Handlers, Emergency Equipment, etc.

Unlike my earlier Airfield Accessories Kits, this will be smaller scale stuff
since most Airliners and Civil Aircraft models are much smaller scale because of the overall size of these aircraft.
This is a new area for me, having designed stuff mainly at 1/33 and larger.

Although my earlier Airfield Accessories were at 1/50 scale,
this time I'll be attempting to design at a very small 1/100.
Although I am considering including multiple scale versions of each accessory, so I might add 1/72 models.

I will definitely be including alternate 1/144 scale versions of each accessory in a simplified build.
These can be reduced further (to 1/200, 1/300) during printing as needed.

I'm not sure exactly where this will go, or how many accessories will be produced.
But it would be nice to include modern and vintage equipment in the kit.

I decided to start with a simpler design to get a feel for the scale.
Something with as few parts as possible to start with...and one of the largest vehicles I will include.
I didn't want to jump straight into something too complicated.

This is a modern Pushback Tractor...based on a TUG Equipment GT-110 or something similar.
I've decided to not be exact to any one piece of equipment, and I will avoid a specific manufacturer's markings.
More of a generic look to things...but obvious and recognizable equipment.

I built two versions fo the 1/100 scale Tug...it has about a dozen parts, with an inner and outer liner for the main body.
Under 3" long...about 7cm.
Some layered parts make up the front details, and I added a cutout rear body section with a couple of small insert pieces.
The Wheels are flat 2D...the inner and outer body parts help add some 3D effect along with body strength.
But, I left the chassis open underneath (for simplicity).

I also created a smaller 1/144 version, but with a simplified build...less parts...about 6 parts in total.
Under 2"...about 5cm.
Its almost half the size!
The main body parts are just one layer with open bottom again.
Almost all details are surface artwork, and I eliminated the rear cutout section.

I think it is still buildable at a smaller scale, but it will require patience, steady fingers and good eyesight.
And this is a failry large vehicle! Those tires are 60" in diameter!

Its a start...and it is teaching me things about designing at this small scale.
I've already got some new ideas for the kit and the individual models.

So for now, I am sending these two designs off to my "test builder" who will help m along the way.
Stay tuned.

What I have designed so far...including the 1/300, 1/500 and 1/1000 experiments!

Between other projects I am still fiddling with this one...
but before I move on to the next piece of Airport Equipment,
I wanted to deal with an obvious accessory.
The long Two Bar thingy that goes behind these Tugs I just built.

Obviously some aircraft require a tow bar extension and this thing looks fairly common on the tarmac.
But at this scale, it presents a real problem to include (as a paper model).

I chose one of the largest Tow Bars, with its own suspended wheels.
And its still very small at 1/100 and 1/144.

The main Tube is only about 1.5 mm diameter (1/100)
Too tight for me to roll as a tube...and a bit too flimsy anyway.

I used a 1.5mm ABS (plastic) rod and wrapped some small paper parts around it.
The Hooks/Connectors are just about impossible to build and make functional.

I think I'll include some of the basic (very small) parts and a diagram of how it all assembles.
And give instructions to use a tube or rod of the necessary length/diameter.
(Just colour it white or yellow and wrap the paper parts)

Still working on Airport Equipment...

haven't personally built all the versions and sizes of this one yet
but here is a Baggage Cart and Tractor.
Shown is the 1/100 scale build with the basic Chassis.
I've also provided a two-part chassis with full 3D wheels.

There is also a 1/144 version of the Tractor and Cart with a more simplified construction.

My "test builder" is also working on these, so I'll add his report sometime.

...
Also...
this particular Mobile Staircase was a direct request of my "test builder".
It seemed a pretty daunting task to simplify and create this in miniature paper,
but eventually I figured out a design that I was happy with.

Once again, I have created two versions...1/100 and 1/144 scale.
The 1/144 scale has a slightly simplified chassis, but the Staircase assembly is basically the same.

I couldn't figure out a working Staircase, so I created two options: retracted or extended.
Build it whatever way you wish.
there are also two chassis types, one with 3D wheels, the other with more simplified box construction and 2D wheels.

I built the 1/100 scale versions...both extended and retracted Staircases...
but I used the full chassis and the simplified chassis to show the differences.

My "test builder" also has these models.

Between other projects, I am still working on Airport vehicles...

these Fire/Rescue (Striker 3000)Trucks are my latest effort.
Haven't sorted out the roof accessories yet though.
Just wanted to get the basic vehicle done first.
There are some different options for accessories.

The white boom parts are just prototype...not sure about how to represent things yet.
At this scale, it needs to look good but not be too complicated to build.
